Project Purpose
This website was created to support educators at every stage of their Indigenization journey by offering clear pathways to trusted resources, classroom-ready materials, and guiding policies that can inform meaningful practice. It is designed as a navigational hub rather than a single answer, helping teachers locate Indigenous-centred materials, community-led perspectives, and provincial frameworks that can be thoughtfully integrated into their classrooms. By exploring resources across Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, the site invites users to compare approaches where applicable, recognize regional and Nation-specific contexts, and deepen their understanding of how Indigenization is enacted differently across Turtle Island. Ultimately, this platform aims to reduce barriers for educators, encourage ethical engagement with Indigenous knowledge, and foster more respectful, relational, and informed teaching practices in secondary education.
Evidence from Canadian and provincial studies indicates that meaningful Indigenization in high school classrooms is associated with measurable improvements in student outcomes: schools that embed culturally responsive, land-based, and community-connected teaching report increases in Indigenous student attendance and retention of roughly 10–15%, stronger senses of belonging and safety (20–30%), and higher overall engagement for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners (15–25%) when Indigenous perspectives are consistently integrated across curriculum (First Nations Education Steering Committee [FNESC], 2019; Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada [TRC], 2015).
